A Bit of Background...
- In 1991, a limestone quarry was proposed for land near the Luther Marsh Conservation Area, also very close to the residential areas of Monck and Damascus
- The quarry proponent is seeking licence to extract (i.e. blast) 1 million tonnes of limestone per year
- In 2007, the Ontario Government approved the proposal, with conditions attached, despite major concerns from the GRCA and others
- For the quarry to go ahead, the land must be rezoned. In 2007, the proponent appealed to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) to force a decision on the rezoning issue, despite concerns from the County
- The OMB process continues...
What's so Special about the Luther Marsh?
- It is a Provincially Significant Wetland, and one of the largest inland wetlands in Southern Ontario.
- Several provincially rare species of birds nest in the Luther Marsh, such as the Canvasback, the Great Egret, and the Red-necked Grebe, as well as threatened species like the Least Bittern.
- Over 70% of Southern Ontario's wetlands have been lost, so the Luther Marsh is very important habitat not only for nesting species, but also for migratory species making stops to rest and feed.
- The Luther Marsh is used by many for birdwatching, hunting, dog training, hiking, snowmobiling, and skiing.
What are the Potential Quarry Impacts?
- Disruptions to nearby ecosystems from noise and dust.
- Disruptions to well water quantity and quality.
- Disruptions to the health and safety of the community due to dust, traffic, and noise.
- Disruptions to water levels in nearby wetlands, including a fen, which is a rare ecosystem in Ontario.
- Disruptions to water quality in nearby wetlands, for example by changing pH and adding sediments.
